Sleep Apnea

Mt. Carmel’s Solution for Restful Sleep

Did you know that a good night’s sleep can be just a dental visit away? Many people don’t associate the dentist with sleeping well, but those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea know all too well how helpful a trip to the dentist can be.

Sleep apnea is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep, usually lasting for at least ten seconds. Muscles located in the back of the throat are unable to keep the airway open, disrupting normal breathing patterns, causing fragmented sleep, and lowering blood oxygen levels. Sleep apnea symptoms include:

  • Chronic snoring

  • Depression

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Excessive sleepiness

  • Memory difficulties

  • Irritability

At Comprehensive Dental Care of Mt. Carmel, we work with a qualified Sleep Center to diagnose your sleep apnea. After a home study, we’ll determine the best method for relief and have you feeling rested every morning.

We may recommend an oral appliance to open your airways while you sleep and allow your body to take in enough oxygen. We use Somnomed and TAP oral appliances.

Somnomed

Worn during sleep, this oral appliance repositions the lower jaw, moving it forward enough that the space behind your tongue can accept more oxygen. It helps strengthen the muscles and soft tissues of your airway, eliminating snoring and helping you gain more restful slumber. Somnomed is often a first course of treatment, and has been proven effective for patients suffering from mild to moderate sleep apnea. It even works for those who are CPAP intolerant.

TAP

The Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) is another option for sleep apnea sufferers. This appliance is smaller and easier to use than other treatments, and many patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. By keeping the jaw stable and forward positioned, this appliance stops your airway from collapsing while you sleep. We can adjust the TAP device to get a perfect fit and ensure you get results.
